Film Analysis:

Mike Sainristil began his college career as a wide receiver for the Wolverines before making the switch to cornerback in 2022. He has 26 starts at CB under his belt over the last two seasons.

Sainristil is a high-IQ football player. He reads route concepts well, especially from off-coverage and/or zone. He processes information quickly before engaging with a route threatening his area. Sainristil does a good job leveraging routes from depth before driving to click/close.

His ability to blitz off the edges is outstanding. Sainristil has a good closing burst/speed to quickly enter the backfield with a chance to sack or affect the passer. He is a better zone coverage corner, where he can get to his landmarks and read the action ensuing in front of him.

Sainristil’s time as a wide receiver is valuable when the ball is in the air. He can pluck the football from flight with ease. He has soft, confident hands. Sainristil battles at the catch point no matter how much smaller he is to the wide receiver’s frame. If he does not come down with the football, he will at least fight to break up the pass.

Sainristil struggles with fluid and clean transitions in man coverage. He plays a lot of off-man and catch technique—flat-footed coverages that lead to him being susceptible to quick and sudden moves to work across his frame or right past him. Positioning versus bigger receivers is something he is not great at.

Sainristil projects as a nickel/slot cornerback with strong blitzing capabilities. He is a better zone coverage fit to bait quarterbacks into risky throws where he can make them pay with his receiver ball skills. In addition, zone coverage allows Sainristil to sit from depth, squat, and make plays in front of him.
