Film Analysis:

Mello Dotson projects as a primary zone corner whose instincts and eyes force QBs into mistakes. He’s an instinctive corner with experience in the Big 12 who has seen it all in the secondary.

In zone, his awareness stands out, as he processes route concepts quickly and reacts decisively to throws in his area. Trusts his eyes to react. Has a knack for creating turnovers, which could pave the way for snaps early on in his career. He can read the eyes of signal-callers, which has led to a solid track record of PBUs and interceptions (12 career INTs). Good speed, not great, to work into the deeper third. Competitiveness is evident, as he plays with an aggressive mindset and does not shy away from physicality both in space or in run support. However, technique in both of those areas requires fine-tuning.

In man, concerns arise about Dotson’s path to snaps. Limited athletically to slide and mirror wideouts and his technique is inconsistent. He also has room to get stronger when asked to work inside the contact window (West Virginia). Can struggle against bigger, more physical receivers who can outmuscle him off the line or at the catch point downfield. Also does not have the required makeup speed if initial space is lost to gain ground and work into the hands of his opponents.

In space, Dotson’s tackling technique is also still a work in progress, as he will take poor angles or fail to wrap up consistently. Eye discipline is also a concern at times, as he has shown a tendency to bite on double moves or any segmented route with varying tempo. At the NFL level, it’s a trait that has to be reeled in against teams that will consistently attack it if spotted on film.

Overall, Dotson is a talented cover corner with the instincts, maturity, and zone ability to compete at the next level. While he may not have elite size, overwhelming physicality, or the traits of a high-level man corner, his reactive movement and playmaking ability give him a chance to contribute as a rotational corner early in his career. If he can improve his strength and discipline, he has the upside to develop into a key rotational defender in the right defensive system.
