Film Analysis:

Kedon Slovis is a five-year starter with loads of experience under his belt. He burst on the scene as a backup at USC—he had his most impressive season on tape and statistically with that program. Since then, he has played for three different programs. With said experience, he has a good understanding of coverages post-snap and where the weaknesses are to exploit. He has good eye manipulation to hold and move second and third-level defenses to open voids for his receivers.

Slovis’ game is predicated on timing and rhythm. He thrives in the pocket when protected to make on-time reads and throws. Slovis throws a catchable ball with a good touch to layer passes over underneath and zone-dropping defenders. He is a great fit for a West Coast offense or one with some West Coast principles. He is most effective in the quick game and attacking between the numbers. He offers raw straight-line speed to gain a few yards with his legs.

Slovis lacks the arm strength to fit passes into tight coverage windows. His passes flutter and hang in the air when trying to push down the field and on far-hash-to-sideline throws. The lack of velocity and power is easy to see on tape when asked to drive the ball. When pressured, Slovis panics and puts the ball up for grabs. Protecting the football needs to be more of a priority for him, as far too many passes are placed in harm’s way as a result of not being able to negotiate pressure. Throwing down the field and outside the numbers are not strengths of Slovis’ game, mostly due to his lack of arm strength.

Overall, Slovis projects as a backup QB. He will most likely fill the QB3 role on the depth chart at worst, finding his way on the practice squad. His experience and quick-game effectiveness will help him make a case for the final QB roster spot.
