Film Analysis:
Kamari Lassiter brings a strong competitive nature to the secondary. He battled well in the contact window and at the catch point. Lassiter is a sticky cornerback who is scheme-versatile. He is comfortable in both man and zone defenses. He uses a nice kick-step from press alignment to stay in phase laterally when the receiver releases. He will squeeze receivers to the sideline/boundary with well-timed arm bars and lean into their frame to create difficult throwing lanes for the QB. Lassiter understands leveraging and how to stay hip-to-hip with his target.
His zone coverage is great. Lassiter will use the bail technique or side-saddle to stay on top of the upfield shoulder of the receiver. He has smooth and fluid hips to gear down and transition based on the route concept in his area. In off-coverage, he uses one-inch steps in his drop as he reads the receiver’s body language mid-stem. Lassiter is willing to stick his face into the fire against the run. He will step in as an alley defender and slow down the momentum of the ball-carrier.
His eyes can get stuck watching the backfield action. He excels playing from depth, but having his eyes in the backfield for too long opens up opportunities to lose track of the receiver—making him vulnerable to double moves, etc.
Lassiter’s long speed is questionable. He doesn’t appear to have that next gear to run stride for stride with the explosive vertical threats without safety help. His tackling form is solid but his finishing can improve. He doesn’t fire through his hips once he breaks down in front of the ball carrier.
Ball production is lacking throughout Lassiter’s career. He tends to face guard in man coverage when targeted down the field. He needs to turn his head and locate the ball to position himself for turnover opportunities.
Overall, Lassiter projects as a starting cornerback with inside/outside flexibility. He excels in zone coverage with his eyes panned forward but can also effectively line up in man coverage. He is a steady Eddie type of prospect that gets the job done.
