Film Analysis:

Jackson Hawes is a primary in-line tight end whose ability as a blocker will earn him snaps, rather than the potential as a flex weapon in space. Hawes has shown the ability to succeed in a variety of ways from a variety of alignments, primarily as a blocker. Currently, his game as a man-mover remains more refined than his skill set as a flex weapon.

As a run blocker, Hawes uses his upper half well to establish leverage and slide with blockers attempting to shed and disengage. He plays with excellent bend and depth in his lower half to sink and drive smaller opponents in the fringe areas and at the second level. Hawes also has experience aligning as the point man in bunch sets as the lead blocker on screens. He’s experienced when asked to serve as the pin-and-pull hinge point to seal his side of the line of scrimmage.

As a pass-catcher, Hawes’ athleticism is good for his size, but he remains extremely raw in that facet. Route-running is average at this point in his evaluation but has room to improve. Hawes’ basketball background shows against zone coverage with the ability to maintain leverage against safeties in his hip pocket. He has strong hands to haul passes into his frame. Hawes is a power-laden athlete with the ball in his hands.

Concerns remain primarily toward his ability after the catch, route-running, and refinement as a pass-catcher. His projection as a rotational flex weapon is muddied at this point. Moving to the ACC should offer the chance for both more targets and production against a higher level of competition.

Overall, Hawes currently projects as an in-line tight end whose path to snaps is as a rotational piece as a run blocker.
