Film Analysis:

Lovett’s quick first step plus his lower-body and upper-body strength combine to make him an impactful defender against the run.

Lovett excels the most at being a technician against the run, showing the ability to lock, peek, and shed. Lovett can execute this maneuver because he shows to have strong hands and the natural power and strength in his hands to control offensive linemen at the snap. Once he has control of the offensive lineman, Lovett does a good job of locating the ball-carrier and can deconstruct the block of the offensive lineman to get to the ball-carrier. Lovett also shows to be a good athlete on designed twists and stunts to get backfield penetration—Lovett has been able to consistently do so at a high level. Lovett is a defensive lineman with body mass but appears to have enough lower-body athleticism to execute these stunts.

Two elements of his game need improvement. The first is consistency against the run. Lovett has all of the physical tools to win a rep but it appears his instincts and play diagnosis are not consistent enough to allow him to be a constant playmaker along the defensive front. The other element is his ability to rush the QB. Lovett has had minimal statistical production rushing the quarterback.

Overall, Lovett is an interior defensive lineman who has all of the physical tools and traits to be an impact player along the defensive front, but he needs to be more consistent in both the run game and rushing the quarterback.
