Film Analysis:

Alfred Collins was a highly recruited five-star prospect coming out of high school, and for good reason. The 6-foot-5, 320-pound defensive lineman has every physical tool necessary to garner NFL attention. With the talents of Byron Murphy II and T’Vondre Sweat gone, all eyes will be on Collins to take the reins of this Texas defensive line.

Collins carries a clean 320-pound frame with a good amount of room to grow. His athletic profile is impressive for his size, but there is some concern about his fluidity as an athlete. He often looks awkward and off-balance when working in close quarters. Collins has an underdeveloped pass-rush repertoire, mostly opting for swipes and hand-fighting off the snap, very rarely going down the chest of linemen. He’s a strong candidate as a ‘pick’ player on stunts, given his ability to cover ground off the snap. He can be disruptive if put in the right situations. There’s three-down ability in his game, but developing his strength, power, and toolbox of pass-rush moves will be the only way to unlock that role for him at the next level.

In the run game, Collins again showed some flashes but overall looked ill-prepared for NFL rushing attacks. Even with his frame, there are questions about Collins’ ability to hold the point of attack against single blocks. He was unable to consistently fit his hands inside, giving up any ability to reset the line of scrimmage. Collins also struggled to withstand gallop blocks when defending against gap run schemes.

Despite his inconsistency, there are still enough flashes on tape to keep me interested in Collins. He checks all the physical boxes, but his play on the field still seems to be in early development. If an organization can effectively continue to grow Collins’ game, there’s no doubt he could be a high-level starter in the league.
